Modest Mouse: ‘King Rat’

So that Modest Mouse video for “King Rat” debuted today. From the opening shots with the woozily rolling seas to the rather grotesque and darkly satirical scenes, it makes quite a splash. Having not heard the song before, now whenever I hear it, it definitely takes on a sinister twist due to its association with the video. Sure, the song has a pretty grim and desperate sound to it anyway, but this is yet another example of the power of visual accompaniment to music. It’s worth mentioning that Heath Ledger was in the middle of directing the video when he died, which adds another element of darkness and mystique to it. Check out the video here.
