Market Hotel Shut Down… Again

Saturday night at the Smith Westerns / Darlings show, a group of cops allegedly swarmed Market Hotel, a surprisingly large unofficial music venue in Bushwick that is known for attracting and packing in large swarms of sweaty concert-goers. The actual reason for the shut-down hasn’t been released, but chances are it has something to do with the fact that the venue does not have a liquor license, is full of under-aged kids, and is a glaring fire hazard.

A taste of the action at the Market Hotel

It certainly a loss. Market Hotel actually attracted a fair number of significant indie (and hip hop) acts over the past couple of years, including: Woods, Real Estate, Wavves, Deerhunter, Black Dice, Vivian Girls, Mount Eerie, and many more. Of course, this is not the first time the venue has been closed, so hopefully the owners can get their act together and re-open soon. In the meantime, the remaining scheduled shows (including Thursday night’s High Places) are slated to be moved to an alternative location.

Let’s just hope the police don’t get any big ideas and shut down other DIY music scenes like Death by Audio and Silent Barn.
